• Jury Duty

From Matthew Munson@VERT/IUTOPIA to All on Thu Oct 15 20:57:00 2026
I think there should be increased Jury Duty fees for long trials over 4 weeks. In California unfortunately its $15, I would raise it to $25 and if its a prolonged trial it would be $40 a day.

If a trial has disturbing evidence, there should be an option of 1 therapist session for free to talk over the issue without discussing the issues of the trial.

    Why not minimum wage?

It should really be the wages one is unable to earn due to being on jury duty.

That would be nice, but I am trying to do something that would not bust budgets. Most states would not
pay anything higher than $50 a day. My proposal is $25 a day after the 1st day, and $40 a day after the
second week or during deliberations whatever comes first.

It's incredibly annoying. I've been in one jury trial and been called
several times. Two of the counties pay for mileage to the courthouse -
but not back home. What local government genius thought that made sense?

One judge I was in her courthouse said 75% of the people ignore their
    jury duty summons.

I think there should be some low cost prizes such as 2 people each
quarter year win a pair of regional parks passes for honoring their jury
    duty summons.

you're lucky you even got that. when i was in a jury trial i got paid 12 bucks a day. we sat in a tiny small HOT room and this guy had a horrible cold and was coughing on everyone. we had to pay for our own parking. i had to go down And put money into the parking meter.

I recently got a jury summons, and this feels like a somewhat awkward time since I just started a new job a few months ago (which has felt a bit stressful to me), and I'm moving just before my jury date too. I'm not moving very far away though (within driving distance). I submitted a request to be excused, saying I just started a new job recently (and "new job hardship" was one of the available reasons), and that I'm moving to a different county, but my request to be excused was denied.

Or just say if I dont keep my job, then I'll be a drain to society.

I've never found it too difficult to be unsavory to one or the other counsel. "My landlord is a cop", said without clarification, with a subconscious expression of contempt should have the defense counsel sending you home... :)
