• What happened to BBS Door games?

What happend to the BBS Muds? Why did they all move away from the BBS and into dedicated servers? The amount of players? Did the Muds really get so many users a BBS couldn't handle it?

In the 1990's, I would sometimes see so many users connected I couldn't get in to the BBS to play when I could or wanted to play.

I might think that in some cases, so many callers were there just for the MUD, that sysops might have re-allocated resources into what they thought might bring in the most money to maintain all the lines.

... It was such a lovely day, I thought it was a pity to get up.

I still have a MUD running on Moe's, mudman. You can find it on moetiki.ddns.net:27 under the doors menu.

Sorry, while I do have mudman, the one that is really like a mud is DoorMUD.

I've been checking out Muds this past week. Waaay to complicated for me. I was never a gamer really. I was into Doom for while back in the day. I also enjoyed Global War on the BBS. I still check Global War for active games but there's no interest. I guess it's too simple for gamers that enjoy muds. That and the fact everyone wants to be a SysOp and not a user ;-)

MUDs and BBS's are branches on a tree, as both were started around the same time, with MUDs maybe even being a bit older as people in govt & college's used to play MUDs, IRC, etc while at work/school. There are also servers where the role playing is very intense and they are not the right place for general discussion.

Thats why I offer CoffeeMUD hosting for $14/month first month free as well as Synchronet hosting - they are groups with a slot of shared features...
