65 years old, died of cancer. He co-wrote some of the songs on
Whitesnake's 1987 album, played guitar on the recorded tracks (although David Coverdale fired the recording band and hired a new band to tour).
Before that, he played guitar with Thin Lizzy. Afterwards, he had a
killer band in the late '80s/early '90s called Blue Murder with The
Firm's Tony Franklin on Bass and Carmine Appice (Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart)
on drums. He then went on to sing and play guitar in the reformed Thin Lizzy.
Blue Murder's self-titled debut spent a couple of years in my car
stereo.
I don't recall hearing a lot of Blue Murder, but when I was in a prog rock band in the mid-late 80s, Carmine Appice and his band at the time (either Blue Murder or King Kobra, I don't recall), rented the rehearsal studio in LA next to ours and we did hear a lot of eachothers tunes. I wrote a bit about my few interactions with Carmine in my obit to the keyboardist of that band (and later good friend and Synchronet contributor):
